A new Jessica Rabbit custom doll has shown up on Flickr. This particular doll is made by David Bocci (Refugio Rosa). Jessica has a very realistic look with all her familiar signature qualities - purple eyeshadow, bright orange hair and a fully sequined gown. A Mattel doll was used as the base and the transformation is stunning. It's been quite a long time since we've gotten any official Jessica Rabbit dolls, and altogether there have only been two ever made. Some of the beautiful customs fill the void in what should be a given for a character that should have a few more dolls made. Let's take a look at this amazing custom...

Custom Jessica Rabbit Barbie

For a brief time there is an amazing Jessica Rabbit custom doll on eBay and it's quite the conversation piece. Taking inspiration from the Jessica Rabbit Mattel doll (released in 1999), this Barbie is made over to look like the cartoon siren of Toontown herself! While we still sit and wait for Disney to make a brand new version of Jessica in ANY type of doll form, take a look at this a one-of-a-kind custom that will have you panting like the patrons at the Ink and Paint Club.

Custom Jessica Rabbit 17 Inch Doll

Disney started a series of 17 inch dolls in 2009 appropriately with Snow White. If you pre-ordered the Diamond Edition DVD you would receive the movie, the doll and a lithograph set for $99. As times passed the dolls were sold on their own and prices rose, but the Princes and Villains were also added into this larger scale series, all complete with Certificate of Authenticity and display box. Since there hasn't been many characters made beyond the Princesses, let's look at one fantastic creation of a custom Jessica Rabbit 17 Inch doll.

Exclusive Jessica Rabbit Doll Artist Interview - Robert Tonner

It's said that at one time Robert Tonner considered becoming a surgeon, and then turned his interests to fashion design. Perhaps his study of the human body lead to the rave reviews by the National Institute of American Doll Artists (NIADA) for a model-like fashion doll he created for critique. Working for designer Bill Blass lead to the launch of his own fashion label, and over time, Tonner combined his love of fashion and his sculpture of dolls to form his very own company, well known to doll collectors everywhere.

Tonner's original creation, Tyler Wentworth, is based on a fictional 7th Avenue fashion designer. Tonner created her wardrobe using materials you would find in closets of Hollywood royalty - silk, cashmere, and brocades which are all topped off by the quality and details the company has become known for. Other licenses soon followed with characters from DC Comics, Marvel, The Wizard of Oz, Harry Potter, The Muppets, Twilight, and Disney all masterfully recreated in Tonner's signature style. Tonner also furthered his own catalog of creations with Antoinette, Cami and Jon, and he released a new series called Déjà Vu.

I was honored to receive an interview with Robert Tonner himself, who created his amazingly detailed 17 inch Jessica Rabbit doll in 2010 - as part of the Walt Disney Showcase Collection. Which comic characters are his favorite? What other plans were there for the Jessica Rabbit doll? Here is what he had to say:

What were some toys/figures/statues that you liked the most as a child?

Robert Tonner:
I was a child of the late fifties and sixties and the toy companies hadn’t yet caught up to the fact that we wanted to see our favorite comic and cartoon characters in toy form—so I had to make do with what was out at the time. I liked both dolls and action figures and played with both—Barbie and G.I. Joe. Mostly, however, I loved my art supplies and I spent hours drawing superhero’s and comic characters.

Disney Pushing The 17 Inch Dolls

Disney's new movie, Wreck-It-Ralph features a whole bunch of retro gaming favorites like Q-Bert and Bowser from Super Mario Brothers - and also includes new characters like Sergeant Calhoun. Disney wasted no time making her into there next 17 inch doll, which went on sale last week. It is a limited edition of 1000 and as of a week later is still available. Seeing a very new character like this already included into the 17 inch doll format still begs the question - will there be a Jessica Rabbit doll in this series? Hopefully with the likes of Sergeant Calhoun joining the ranks, the probability has gotten better.

Lady Tremaine Doll A Success

The surprise Lady Tremaine doll released on October 2nd was a big success, selling out within a few hours of release. While people are questioning Disney's liberal use of purple material for the Wicked Stepmothers ample collar - everyone who has her in hand says that the doll is stunning in person. Up close and personal photos (via DRJ1828) show how detailed and well designed this collection is. Yet another testament of why the dolls are so popular and well received. I believe their title is something like the Heirloom Collection, but rumors are buzzing about who else could be released down the line. Peter Pan is scheduled for rerelease in March 2013, with many people wanting Peter, Wendy, or Captain Hook more so than Tinker Bell (who has tons of dolls already available.) There is no set release date for the Who Framed Roger Rabbit 25th Anniversary DVD, but the best guess would be some time during the summer if they are making it a genuine Anniversary commemoration. Could we really be seeing a Jessica Rabbit 17 inch doll made for next year?

Could A New Jessica Doll Be Coming

During the past few years, Disney started to release a very special limited edition collector doll in conjunction with a DVD release. The Snow White doll was the first to be released, along with the DVD coming out on the same date in 2009. The doll was available for pre-order and sold for $99. It was a Limited Edition of 5000, and from what I understand, it has become a fairly sought after doll today. Other Princesses soon followed - up to Rapunzel, she too was released - but there was a surprise doll released as well of Mother Gothel, at an edition size of only 1500 in 2011. Also that year, two surprise dolls (Alice, and Queen of Hearts) were released during the hype of the Disney Designer Princess dollMAGEDDON, and both of them were a Limited Edition of only 500 each. Jumping to 2012, Cinderella is being re-released on DVD, this time for Blu Ray, and a doll is also on the way October 2nd. A surprise release which was just found out will be Cinderella's wicked stepmother, Lady Tremaine, making only her second appearance now in doll form. With this trend, could we possibly see a Jessica Rabbit doll released in 2013 along with the Who Framed Roger Rabbit 25th Anniversary Blu Ray DVD? There really is no telling if this is a possibility at this point. To not celebrate the special anniversary with some new merchandise would be a shame, but the past anniversaries had not offered much, other than pins. With Disney's new interest in releasing very limited edition dolls at the same time as a DVD, it seems only fitting to have a new and improved Jessica Rabbit doll. Stay Tooned!!

Jessica Rabbit Tonner Doll Sold Out

It appears that all locations selling the Tonner Jessica Rabbit doll are officially sold out. The doll was released in July/August of 2010, and was a limited edition of 1000. Tonner Direct, Entertainment Earth, and other vendors are sold out - although you can find it on eBay now and then. If you have not bought it yet, be sure to get one when you see it. Though no news ever came of the rumored Jessica Rabbit trunk set - Tonner's next project is going to be the characters of Tim Burton. So far there were previews of his reimagined versions of The Corpse Bride and Beetlejuice.

2011 Year End Review

ImNotBad.com had gotten off to a very slow start when the site first opened in 2008, but this year there were over 100 posts, 7 artist interviews, and 19 merchandise reviews.



The Jessica Rabbit merchandise news had slowed down a lot since there was a huge cut-back in DisneyStore.com pins. Only 36 Jessica pins were released in 2011, 6 of which came from DisneyStore.com (that is a huge difference from the over 100 Jessica pins released in 2007.) The remaining 30 Jessica pins released in 2011 came from the parks or The Disney Soda Fountain Studio Store. There was no Halloween or Christmas series either, which had many people asking why this happened. Disney pins as a whole seemed to be scaled back considerably, with not only Jessica, but many fan-favorite characters going missing throughout the year.

The Jessica Rabbit Premium Format Figure had long been rumored by Sideshow Collectibles - creating other Disney characters like Maleficent and Captain Hook down the line. Finally Jessica was revealed just before the San Diego Comic Con in July, and had everyone drooling. Sadly, the lack of an exciting Exclusive Edition and high limited edition size put people off - although as of now the Exclusive Edition is still sold out and everyone seems to agree it will be the best and most accurate Jessica Rabbit statue ever. With every company on an 80's kick, you would think there would have been a big resurgence in Roger and Jessica merchandise. That surely was not the case. Thundercats, He-Man, Ghostbusters, Smurfs, and soon even Jem, are all getting back in the public eye - so why not Jessica?

Disney Parks did have some offerings besides pins this year. A new Jessica Rabbit art print by Darren Wilson was released during the last quarter of the year, and back in the beginning of the year, I'm not bad... I'm just drawn to chocolate candy was released with an image of Jessica on the box.

It did seem to be a year of celebrities drawing inspiration from Jessica. Angelina Jolie, Kelly Clarkson, Rihanna, and more donned a look very similar to that of Jessica - and a tight red dress was a hit for many women at different events, and Jessica Rabbit became a popular costume for Halloween.

We had some fantastic interviews from different Jessica Rabbit artists found only on this site- including the creator of Jessica Rabbit, Gary K Wolf. Pin designer, Wendy Gell, told us which real life Princess received one of the first ever Jessica Rabbit pins, while doll designer, Lisa Temming, explained exactly why the look of the Mattel Jessica Rabbit doll was changed at the last minute.



The biggest news was discovering that Jessica Rabbit was one of the characters in the Disney On Ice Show - unfortunately that was was back in 1990, and as of now I have not seen any photos of her in the show. Another discovery by this site was that the building which housed the Jessica's store was home of the Dick Tracy Store first. That meant the Jessica Rabbit store could have only been open for about a year and a half. The sequel film to Who Framed Roger Rabbit may have stalled, but this Jessica Rabbit website is still going. Hopefully, there will be many more exciting interviews and developments over the next year. Stay Tooned!

While I'm not an avid doll collector, there are certainly some that catch my eye from time to time. One series that did was the Disney Princess Designer Collection. There was a Limited Edition pin set released of the artwork for all ten Disney Princess - Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Jasmine, Belle, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana and Rapunzel. The pin set was only available at the D23 Expo in August, and is now selling for big bucks on eBay.

Jessica Rabbit Merchandise Review # 6 - Jessica Rabbit Tonner Doll

Robert Tonner, designer and sculptor well known for his amazing, high-quality fashion dolls, formed the reputable and respected Tonner Doll company. Over the years has created his own original characters, as well as familiar ones like Wonder Woman, Harry Potter, Edward Cullen, and even Miss Piggy.

When the official Disney Princess line began, Tonner brought to life such characters as Belle, Snow White, and Maleficent with stunning detailed costumes and a very signature look that Tonner dolls became known for.



Surprisingly, a Jessica Rabbit doll was revealed in February of 2010. It was also showcased at the Toy Fair in New York along with other new additions such as Tiana from The Princess and the Frog.

Jessica Rabbit Merchandise Review #3 - Mattel Doll

It was unfortunate that a Jessica Rabbit doll slipped through the merchandise cracks back in 1988, but at that time, a sexy cartoon doll was something I'm sure few retailers were going to risk creating. Although adults had been collecting such things for years now, that was a time before the internet would bring all the geeks together to shop in the safety of their mother's basement - thus also making it way before the demand for female collectibles was realized.



Some time in 1999, a sneak peek image of the first ever Jessica Rabbit doll was released and made its way through the web. It was more than stunning, and looked to be everything a Jessica collector could imagine... but things changed. Another image was found of the doll on display at Toy Fair, with slight variations. The modifications were not all that bad and is something that happens to products all the time. Jessica was prominently featured too, along with a nice display of the Ink and Paint Club stage. But, when a third image was released, replacing the first on many sites, it showed a very different look, making things bit confusing. In the end the doll actually released seemed like a combination of all three, but looked less like the original image. Let’s examine.

First, the face and hair. The initial image released was actually very close to what Jessica should look like. She had the larger eyelid, small nose and bigger lower lip. The Toy Fair image looked similar except her hair was longer and skin-tone lighter. The new image was totally different though. Her eyelid was sculpted a lot smaller and she now had a deep line of eye shadow around it. Her eyes were more open. Her expression was no longer a Mona Lisa smile, but rather a pout. Her upper lip was much larger than the lower and her face was very rounded.

The body was the next big difference. The skin-tones seemed to change a little, along with her bust size. The arms appear to have changed slightly with more attention on the purple coloration than the shape. The dress in the last photo puts the slit on the correct side and the over all dress look changed. The leg, which had a nice slight bend to it in the first images, is totally taken away in the last- going just straight down to her high heels, which are sculpted onto the doll.





The end result uses much of the elements from the latter promo photo. However, the doll still looks good for the first attempt ever. The doll stands at about 14 inches tall. The dress is an oddly stiff material though, but I suppose it's better made to stay in place. The glitter seems to be put on top of the material rather than part of it, but I don't recall any glitter coming off very easily - which is a plus. The purse is stitched to the dress which is a little annoying, and if you are planning to remove her from the box, be prepared to take some time with it. She is articulate at her neck, biceps and at an odd waist angle. She also wears gold earrings and black panties - settling that nasty rumor once and for all.



The other accessory Jessica comes with is her stand. The backing is a clear plastic which goes around her waist and connects to the base. The base is shaped like a film reel with her name on a decal across the side. The box is an interesting shape with an hourglass type window that extends to the top of the box. The color is a deep purple that really presents the doll well, especially with the spotlight look behind her. The movie logo is fantastic as the red finished with glitter.



I'm not exactly sure why this was called WOW! Jessica Rabbit Special Edition. The title to Who Framed Roger Rabbit did not end with a question mark, as it was considered bad luck in Hollywood to end your movie title with one. Perhaps they should have used this rule here when creating the doll - WOW!. Also, calling it a Special Edition is peculiar, since there was no other edition of this doll.

There was no official reason given for the change to the doll's look. Read the Exclusive interview with the Jessica Mattel Doll designer, Lisa Temming, to find out plenty of details about this doll. According to a doll sculpting website, "This was a licensed sculpt that was done for the Disney licensing department at Mattel. This was a very hot property and so took many meetings between Disney and Mattel to get the final approval. Once on the shelves, it was an extremely hot seller."


This gets a 3½ because of that teaser image being released not actually being the doll offered. It's good for a first time Jessica Rabbit, and the details and colors are all correct here, but the unreleased prototype set expectations very high.
