This Easter pin of Roger and Jessica Rabbit caused a lot of discussion. The original concept art which was released (below) was supposed to be released. When people saw this, they voiced how displeased they were with Jessica's appearance, especially since she looked so much like the concept art for the Easter Mystery Set. When the pin showed up on the website for sale, the pin had been changed (above). The pin for the artwork below was never released.

The First Jessica Rabbit Animation Test

Video has surfaced of a Disney television special from 1983 which features a section on a brand new film in the works at that time, Who Framed Roger Rabbit!. The animators discuss the plot, story and characters for this new film and we are treated to concept art and test animation. This version is a bit different than the one we know, with the character designs for Roger and Jessica Rabbit in their earliest original stages. This version of Jessica is a lot more cartoony, with a distinct early 80's feel. She seems to resemble Lauren Bacall with the attitude of Bette Davis. Her face design is more of a caricature; with harder edges and dramatic lines. Her proportions don't nearly match that which we see in the movie. She is given an ample chest, but isn't as shapely or curvy. She's wearing a dress which does not resemble the one in the movie at all - a tight, long-sleeve, light blue top and full dark blue skirt. In one of her original sketches (below left) she's wearing a turtleneck sweater - a very big difference indeed. We're treated to a more in-depth look at Jessica, and even her first ever test animation.

Jessica Rabbit Puzzle Concept Artwork

Have you seen all the Jessica Rabbit merchandise there is? How about some stuff that never got produced? Here you can see four fantastic puzzle concepts by Len Smith, all dated 1996. There was a Len Smith who worked on animation for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and these may have been drawn by that same person. Jessica Rabbit merchandise was scarce in the mid 90's, and these puzzles were probably among many great merchandise ideas that were shelved. The first puzzle is from the climactic ending scene of Who Framed Roger Rabbit - with Roger and Jessica tied together as they face the dreaded Dipmobile.

The next one is Jessica on stage at the Ink and Paint Club. It's not the usual scene depicted of Jessica parting the curtain, but rather of her shimmying down the wall. Another end scene moment is used for the puzzle concept with Jessica giving Roger a big hug. Last we have a scene from one of the Roger Rabbit cartoon shorts, Roller Coaster Rabbit. Jessica Rabbit has been tied to the tracks by the dastardly - Droopy Dog!?

All the artwork is very character-accurate and looks beautiful. Jessica is definitely at her curvy best, and Len Smith didn't skimp on her at all - perhaps that had a little more to do with these not being made. Either way, it's sad that these puzzles didn't get created.

Exclusive Jessica Rabbit Artist Interview - David Russell

What better way to begin a new year than with an exclusive ImNotBad.com artist interview. This one is quite a surprise. I was contacted by David Russell in Australia, who worked for Amblin Entertainment as concept artist on Who Framed Roger Rabbit. He also worked on other films such as Return of the Jedi, The Chronicles of Narnia, Batman, The Color Purple and X-Men Origins. Naturally I had a lot of questions for someone who worked so directly in the filmmaking process, and was honored when he responded with lots of fantastic information about Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Jessica. Find out what he thinks about animator Richard Williams, the Disney Studio's real concerns about Jessica, her deleted scene in Eddie's bathtub, if Harrison Ford had been cast as Eddie, why he feels the characters disappeared for so long, and be the first to know when he's going to sell his collection of artwork from various film projects.

It's very exciting to have you for our special interview. To let the readers know a little more about you, what was it that inspired you to start drawing?

David Russell:
My creative journey began in childhood, when my imagination was stirred by fantasy books such as the Oz series. This lead to an interest in mythology, especially Norse tales. Somewhat later I chanced upon the dynamic comic book work of Jack Kirby, and this influence set me on my path as a visual artist.
